I know this isn't directly Pirates Against Bush, but it is current and new-ish enough that I decided to put this here rather than in the unrelated or general sections. Free trade, for those of you who don't know, sucks. Fair trade ensures that the product wasn't made in sweatshops, etc. For the Olympics there are lots of workers and clothing etc. and there is currently legislation in the House of Representatives (I mean the national one) to get the Olympics (in Greece) to use Fair Trade policies (finally!). So take action! Sign the petition at ga0.org/campaign/play_usoc/step1.tclAlso, my internet doesn't let me open two windows at once so I can't look up the exact address right now, but look up the Make Trade Fair campaign and the Equal Exchange for more information about fair vs. free trade.

This Saturday is Make Trade Fair action day. Captain Laura and I will be doing things in Boston about coffee, talk to us for suggestions or to join us. (see calendar)
Also, a campaign is being started at CSW to get fair trade coffee, soda and juice machines, and maybe eventually fair trade clothing for school apparel. Talk to Squashbuckler Eric, Pirate DanArrr, or Pirate Ben for more details.

The push for fair trade, particularly coffee, has begun at CSW! As of Monday, PirateDanArrr and I began asking questions in the Business office and in the kitchen, and found out that someone in the school store contracts for the soda machines, and that the kitchen is in charge of the juice and coffee machines. More specifically, the school has hired the company "Flik" to prepare food at CSW, and in turn, Flik hires companies (Coca-Cola and Superior Coffee) for the juice and coffee. It looks to be a hard fight, because Flik and their contracts to these companies go well beyond CSW. We now have the phone number for the Superior Coffee representative and we are meeting Friday to discuss this more with other people interested. Updates will be posted here.

Also thought I should mention that the Radical Student Alliance at Brandeis has started a Fair Trade Brigade and one of their methods of approach is to have coffeehouses with performances (and of course, fair trade coffee). sounds like something we could borrow ideas from.

Here is an update from Nicole (who is not a pirate but is also working on getting Fair Trade coffee at CSW): superior coffee (appparently the coffee co that FLIK contracts with) does not make a fair trade coffee. (it claims it's globally responsible, yada yada but i suspect that's bs) however, superior coffee seems to be owned by a larger corporation called sara lee coffee and tea. (how cute, it rhymes) one of the other lines that sara lee owns is called Prebica Whole Planet which IS fair trade certified by TransFair USA. it also comes in three different kinds, one of which is decaf. all these companies have websites if you want to check them out. so possibly flik could switch the coffee it supplies without actually changing the broader company it contracts with? hopefully more soon, and if anyone else has other info that they could post, it would be great. that way we can all stayed networked and in da loop... -Nicole www.transfairusa.org/
