I am starting this section to announce last minute news, such as things that come up too quickly to be publicized via email or calendar. First, tomorrow there is a protest against the bag checks on the MBTA at Downtown Crossing (orange line near boston common) from 4-6pm. you should come stand up for your rights. Here is a short article I wrote about it on Indymedia: boston.indymedia.org/newswire/update/index.php

Massachusetts seems to vote Democratically so more activism about the election might be a little more preaching to the choir if we want to make a difference, maybe we could have a PAB trip somewhere.

yes i very much agree. new hampshire and maine are both swing states, and were each decided by under 5% of the states' votes. maine swung democrat in 2000 and new hampshire swung republican. we should go up there and do something... but what?

A PAB trip is actually on the agenda for the Pirates meeting during the Pool Party! If anyone has anything else they want to talk about (the agenda is now pretty long, just off the top of my head: us organizing around issues individual members feel strongly about, local politics, taking a trip, new actions to persue etc) I'll pass around the list at the Party and hopefully we'll get some planning done.
See you there Capt'nLaura

TONIGHT at 7 pm at the Park Street Stop (Boston Common) there is a peace vigil organized by many peace groups to commemorate the 1000 dead soldiers and the wounded and the innocent Iraqi deaths and injuries. There are vigils nationwide tonight! ALSO, members of Congress (in the house) are trying to pass a bill helping to fix the loss workers received when Bush cut overtime pay to 6 million. Go here: www.unionvoice.org/campaign/support_Obey to contact your supporters. I know First Mate Dan is big on this one.

A message from the ACLU about Ashcroft trying to expand the Patriot Act: 1) Ashcroft Continues to Seek New Powers 2) Oppose Backdoor Attempts to Institute a National ID Attorney General Ashcroft and his allies in Congress are taking advantage of the 9/11 Commission report to push an expansion of the powers of the Department of Justice and erode key checks and balances that prevent government abuse. Many of their earlier proposals met with defeat, but now they are pushing new legislation that would dramatically expand on the PATRIOT Act and even further restrict our freedom. This proposed legislation would increase the government’s power to secretly obtain personal records without judicial review. Also, by expanding “administrative subpoena” powers, it would erode already diminished judicial oversight in terrorism cases and would allow access to confidential records without individual suspicion of wrongdoing. The 9/11 Commission's final report clearly indicated that government agents failed to properly use the powers already available. By granting new powers and removing key checks and balances, we are increasing the risk of government abuse and the threat of unnecessary searches. This proposed legislation might be voted on as early as next week. Your Members of Congress need to hear from you now. Take Action! Urge your Members of Congress to oppose this dangerous expansion of government powers. Click here for more information and to take action: www.aclu.org/NationalSecurity/NationalSecurity.cfm?ID=16491&c=242) Oppose Backdoor Attempts to Institute a National ID Several Senators are expected to try to use the 9/11 Commission report to push the creation of a national ID system even though there are numerous reasons why such a ID would not make us any safer. In fact, a national ID could make it easier for terrorists to operate. A national ID, whether a unique card or a standardized drivers license, could essentially become an internal passport that could compromise our privacy, limit our freedom and expose us to unfair discrimination based on national origin or religion. The implementation of a national ID program would require integration of huge amounts of personal information included in state and federal government databases. One employee mistake, an underlying database error or common fraud could take away an individual's ability to move freely from place to place or even make them unemployable until the government fixed their "file." Terrorists and identity thieves could take advantage of this system’s weakness and travel freely. Congress may vote on this issue as early as next week so it is important that they hear from you today. Take Action! Urge your Members of Congress to oppose the creation of a National ID. Click here for more information and to take action: www.aclu.org/NationalSecurity/NationalSecurity.cfm?ID=16490&c=109

again, passing information along. Phoebe please add this to the calendar if you get this in time. thanks i think this is an amazing idea, because it would be great to have a general meeting place or somewhere to go to make banners, flyers, etc. besides the Lucy Parsons Center and Spontaneous Celebrations (which are far apart).
OLMAC, formerly Boston Free Space, will be meeting on Saturday, October 2nd at 11:30am next to the Boylston T stop (on the green line). This meeting is for anyone interested in helping to open another radical, free, community oriented space in Boston. E-mail contraelolvido@riseup.net if you have any questions or are interested.

I added it to the calendar but I'm not going to add it to the News And Events section because I'd just have to take it off again tomorrow by noon to update it and that would be pointless.

besides the news above about tomorrow, here is news about goings on saturday and sunday at the lucy parsons center: 1. Sat Oct 9, 7pm: NE Antifascist Movie Night 2.Sun Oct 10, 2pm: IWW Meeting 3.Sunday, Oct 10, 4pm -Coffee Shop Labor Organizing Meeting I will probably be at the first one and may try to head out to the second two. I've been to antifa movie nights before and they were good (Pirate Mike, Captain Laura and I went once). Coffee Shop Labor Organizing Meeting Sunday, October 10 4pm, Lucy Parsons Center On May 17, 2004 Starbucks baristas at the 36th and Madison location announced publicly that they formed a union with the Industrial Workers of the World IU/660. As our fellow workers continue to battle for better working conditions in New York City, the struggle continues to expand throughout the coffee shop sector of the retail industry. Recently, in Western Massachusetts, a group of coffee shop workers approached the Industrial Workers of the World for help in organizing their workplace. Following the logic of industrial unionism, our efforts are most successful when all workers of a given industry are organized under a common banner. The interests of the working class are upheld when workers everywhere unite under this common banner to engage the hostile efforts of the bosses, and pursue a better life. This Sunday, members of the Boston Branch of the Industrial Workers of the World, Class Against Class (NEFAC), and other local activists will be meeting at the Lucy Parsons Center to discuss the continuation of this struggle. All who are interested in initiating an organizing campaign locally in Boston to compliment the struggles already existing in Western Massachusetts as well as New York City are welcomed to participate. baamboston.orgAlso, everyone should know, that the House of Representatives DEFEATED the bill in favor of the draft in the house (though there is still an unpopular one in the senate).

FBI took the hard drives of IMC servers in the UK!!! Pressrelease, 7 October 2004 From IMC URL: www.indymedia.orgThursday morning, 7 October 2004, US authorities issued a federal order to Rackspace ordering them to hand over Indymedia web servers to the requesting agency. Rackspace, which provides hosting services for more that 20 Indymedia sites at its London facility, complied and turned over the requested servers, effectively removing those sites from the internet. Since the court order was issued to Rackspace and not to Indymedia, the reasons for this action are still unknown to Indymedia. Talking to Indymedia volunteers, Rackspace stated that "they cannot provide Indymedia with any information regarding the order." ISPs have received gag orders in similar situations which prevent them from updating the concerned parties on what is happening. It is unclear to Indymedia how and why a server that is outside the US jurisdiction can be seized by US authorities. At the same time an additional server was taken down at Rackspace which provided streaming radio to several radio stations, BLAG (linux distro), and a handful of miscellanous things. The last few months have seen numerous attacks on independent media by the US Federal Government. In August the Secret Service used a subpoena in an attempt to disrupt the NYC IMC before the RNC by trying to get IP logs from an ISP in the US and the Netherlands. Last month the FCC shut down community radio stations around the US. Two weeks ago the FBI requested that Indymedia takes down a post on the Nantes IMC that had a photo of some undercover Swiss police and IMC volunteers in Seattle were visited by the FBI on the same issue. On the other hand, Indymedia and other independent media organisations were successfull with their victories for example against Diebold and the Patroit Act. Today however, the US authorities shut down IMCs around the world. The list of affected local media collectives includes Ambazonia, Uruguay, Andorra, Poland, Western Massachusetts, Nice, Nantes, Lilles, Marseille (all France), Euskal Herria (Basque Country), Liege, East and West Vlaanderen, Antwerpen (all Belgium), Belgrade, Portugal, Prague, Galiza, Italy, Brazil, UK, part of the Germany site, and the global Indymedia Radio site.
